The Bowery is New York City’s most famous and historic street. It runs the length of Manhattan from Canal Street in the South to Houston Street in the North, and between those two points it’s just about as wide as it is long. The name “Bowery” comes from Dutch bower meaning “gateway” or “entrance.” But this nameless, faceless gateway to New York has changed a great deal over the years. In the 17th century, this was a bustling neighborhood where you could find merchants selling groceries, shoes and other goods. Today, it’s known for its red-light district and nightlife but there are still some secrets (and hidden alleys) to be discovered here. 1. Take a stroll along the Bowery in springtime.
