Hilbert College’s Paralegal Studies program is distinguished by tradition and excellence. Whether you’re considering a career in law or not, this program provides an excellent foundation in the principles of law.
Hilbert’s paralegal studies program, Western New York’s longest-running and region’s only ABA-approved B.A. in Paralegal Studies, offers a strong combination of theory and practice.
What is a Paralegal
Paralegals work in a variety of areas such as litigation, bankruptcy, business law, immigration, wills and estates, family law, civil litigation, court administration and much more. Paralegals assist clients with legal needs, and may prepare documents, prepare documents, research legal information, and perform other types of clerical work.
Generally speaking, a paralegal will be paid a flat rate, either hourly or daily, and is allowed to bill multiple clients simultaneously. If the position involves an in-house paralegal assisting a lawyer with the preparation of legal documents, the position is an attorney assistant, not a paralegal.
The paralegal program at Hilbert College focuses on paralegal education.
The Importance of a Legal Degree
Legal skills are valuable in every profession. Paralegals help with legal processes including:
Business law
Personal law
Litigation
Trusts
Regulations
Criminal law
and more.

What’s the Difference between a Paralegal and an Attorney?
“An attorney is a lawyer, and a paralegal is an employee of a law firm who takes responsibility for the responsibilities of an attorney.”
What does that mean? In other words, paralegals cannot claim to be legal experts.
Paralegals’ duties in law offices are much like those of administrative assistants. They prepare written reports, take dictation, complete research tasks and perform legal research for attorneys. In fact, a paralegal may perform all or a portion of an attorney’s duties when an attorney is unavailable.
The main difference between paralegals and attorneys is their training. In order to work as a paralegal, you have to attend graduate-level law school.
