What is a Urology exam? How is the urology exam performed? And what are some things that I can do to prepare for it? Check out these frequently asked questions about urology exams.
Do you need to know how to pass a urine test? Want to learn about the urethra exam? Urology exam is an examination of the male reproductive organs. Learn more about it here.
Eating a Healthy diet
General considerations for your diet
“General considerations for your diet” includes things like the color of your urine. I know you’ve heard the saying “avoid orange juice!” I have a friend who told me he drinks the last half of his orange juice, and throws the orange away because he doesn’t want to get the color in his urine. You should avoid that at all costs. (It turns out the red color is really good for you).
It’s also important to eat a healthy diet if you plan on taking a urology exam. You can find more information on healthy diets here.
How do you pass a urine test? If your urine has too much protein, too much fat or too much sugar in it, you will pass a urine test.
Getting Plenty of Sleep
Getting plenty of sleep is vital when preparing for any health and wellness exam. To ensure that you can be ready for your urology exam, I recommend getting about 8 to 9 hours of sleep per night, to prepare your body for any changes and tests you might need.
For optimal results, sleeping on your side will also be great for prostate health. Learn how to sleep on your side to reduce back pain, improve sleep, and strengthen your muscles.
Get plenty of exercise
In order to be healthy, getting plenty of exercise is a good idea. However, that’s not the same as becoming an athlete. For a healthy life, any amount of exercise is healthy! Get the most out of your workout by exercising moderately, at least 3 to 5 days a week, for at least 30 minutes per day.
Staying Calm
Yes, just as in any other exam, being calm will be the key to getting through the exam and feeling comfortable. Stay hydrated, eat a light breakfast, and stretch beforehand. Try to wake up 15-20 minutes early to take a few deep breaths and calm down. This is always easier said than done, especially when you’re staring down at the urinal in front of you.
During the exam
The urinal urination test can be one of the most intimidating aspects of a male physical exam. It’s the first thing that most patients report as being the most uncomfortable. But don’t worry. It’s not as bad as you might think. It’s also the easiest thing that the urologist will do during the exam.
Most men can pass the urinal test without any problem.
What to Wear
A doctor’s office will provide you with some comfortable clothing to wear during your visit. Make sure you keep those shoes and socks on, so you don’t get them dirty and lose them.
Even if you aren’t required to cover your crotch with a sheet, don’t wear shorts or pants with a low crotch. If the exam involves the genitals, make sure the area you are examining is clean.
Who can do the exam
According to Dr. Robert Fink’s Urology and the Female Pelvic Health, urologists are the only physicians that are specially trained to examine and treat men. They also are the only physicians that can test for fertility and testicular cancer.
If you are to be evaluated by a urologist, it will most likely be your doctor.
Preparing for an Exam
The last thing I want to do when heading to the urologist is to have to learn the questions. In order to prepare, I’ll take some time to do some online research and familiarize myself with what’s coming. I always keep a positive attitude and focus on the good that comes with every exam. So, when I head into my exam, I have a positive mindset.
Below are a few ways that I prepare for the exam.
Sit in the waiting room
I often like to come in early to do this. I’ll do a warm up run, play some sports with my kids, do some household chores, or just stare out the window. By just taking a few moments before the exam, I can clear my head.
Before the exam, I’ll sit and listen to music. My favorite pieces are electronic and house music. I’ve found that these have a calming effect on my mind.
How do I Prepare for the Urology Exam?
On the physical exam, it’s necessary to note any problems or concerns you may have about your testicles, scrotum or urinary tract (including prostate and bladder). As this will affect your overall well-being and ability to work, get along with others, and lead an active, healthy life, you need to make sure you’re prepared to bring these concerns to your doctor’s attention.
While you’ll also want to prepare for the procedure, the best time to do so is before the appointment. Make sure you’re well-hydrated with water, and schedule plenty of time to allow for any problems that may occur.

Less Than 4 Hours: Everything You Need to Know About Getting Through the Urology Exam
It can be a long day. It can be a longer day. It may take days before everything goes back to normal. But you’ll get through it.
Important things to remember before the exam are:
Don’t drink any alcohol for at least 48 hours before the exam. You don’t need to wait that long before you see the doctor, but this is just an exam! There are so many variables you have to worry about before you even get in the exam room.
