About William Paterson University

William Paterson was founded in 1855 and is the second oldest of the nine state colleges and universities in New Jersey. William Paterson offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees through its five academic colleges. In the fall semester 2017, 8,838 students and 1,414 students were enrolled.

For over a century his sole responsibility was to train teachers for schools in New Jersey. In 1951 the university moved to its current campus. Originally known as Ailsa Farms, the property was purchased from the state of New Jersey in 1948 by the family of Garret Hobart, the twenty-fourth vice president of the United States.
