A brief history of the Ghana Immigration Service
Prior to Ghana obtaining her independence, the Ghana Immigration Service was known as the Immigration and Passport Unit. The unit was a division of the Gold Coast Police Force which was under the leadership of Mr. Neville C. Hill. As soon as the country gained independence in 1957 there was a great influx of foreign nationals seeking to make investments in different forms.
The increase in immigration affairs forced the government to move the service from under the Police to the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Interior. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs,on the other hand, handled the issuance of passports. All of these steps were taken to ensure proper service delivery.
