The Function of National Universities Commission (NUC) | Just about two years after Nigeria’s independence, the National University Commission (NUC)  was established as an advisory agency on higher education in the cabinet office of the First Republic of Nigeria.

About The National Universities Commission

The National Universities Commission is an important arm of government whose responsibility is the development and management of university education in Nigeria. The NUC grants approval for all academic programmes run in Nigerian universities, approves the establishment of all higher educational institutions offering degree programmes in Nigerian universities, ensures quality of all academic programmes offered in Nigerian universities as well as running other supervisory and inspectorate duties.

History of The National Universities Commission

The National Universities Commission was first established in 1962 as an advisory agency within the government’s cabinet office but was then upgraded in 1974 to a full statutory body under the stewardship of Prof. Jibril Aminu. The NUC is currently headed by Professor Shehu Galadanchi with Prof. Abubakar Rasheed as its Executive Secretary.

Weather at The National Universities Commission

National Universities Commission is located in Abuja North-Central of Nigeria.Thus, it experiences three weather conditions every year.  This includes a warm, humid rainy season and a blistering dry season.  In between the two, there is a brief interlude of harmattan occasioned by the northeast trade wind, with the main feature of dust haze and dryness. Temperatures can drop to as low as 16 degrees during the harmattan period.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) functions as a coordinating body responsible for the “orderly development and management” of university education in Nigeria.

Working with the Universities, both the Federal Government and State Governments and other stakeholders, the Commission’s main mandate is the improvement of the quality of tertiary education and graduates of the nation’s university system.

Some Facts you Should Know About the NUC:

  1. NUC was established in 1962 as an advisory agency in the Cabinet Office.

  2. In 1974, NUC became a statutory body

  3. Prof. Jibril Muhammad Aminu is the first Executive Secretary (ES), serving from 1975–1979

  4. Professor Julius A. Okojie, OON is the current ES of the NUC. He assumed office on August 3, 2006

  5. NUC is a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Education (FME)

  6. NUC has a Governing Council headed by the Board Chairman

  7. The present Governing Board of the NUC was re-constituted on Monday 28th October, 2013 with Sen.Dr. Amadu Ali,fss,CON, GCON as Board Chairman

  8. NUC has twelve Departments; Department of Academic Standards, Department of Inspection and Monitoring, Department of Management Support Services, Department of Students Support Services, Department of Research and Innovations, Department of Information and Communications Technology, Department of Finance and Accounts, Depatment of Quality Assurance, Depatment of Physical Planning and Development, Department of Open and Distance Education, Liason Office Department and the Executive Secretary’s Office.

  9. Each of department of the NUC is headed by a Director.

  10. The national headquarters of the NUC is located at Aja Nwachukwu House, No. 26, Aguiyi Ironsi Street Maitama District, P.M.B. 237, Garki G.P.O., Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria.

  12. The Commission has four main functions:

  • Granting approval for all academic programmes run in Nigerian universities;

  • Granting approval for the establishment of all higher educational institutions offering degree programmes in Nigerian universities

  • Ensure quality assurance of all academic programmes offered in Nigerian universities

  • Channel for all external support to the Nigerian universities
